Aditya Hridayam

Aditya Hridayam is a powerful hymn praising Lord Surya (the Sun God). Although it appears to belong to the path of devotion (Bhakti), it reflects the profound truths of Advaita Vedanta.

Aditya Hridayam: The Supreme Advaita Meaning

Aditya Hridayam is not just about praising the external Sun. According to Advaita, it is the recognition of the singular "Consciousness-Sun" present within us and the entire universe.

1. The Sun A Symbol of Parabrahma:

• According to Advaita: The Sun God described in Aditya Hridayam is not merely a physical star. He is a direct manifestation of Parabrahma. In Advaita, Brahman is the indivisible, formless, and self-luminous consciousness.
• The Supreme Meaning: Just as the Sun shines by its own light and grants light and life-force to the whole world, Parabrahma is the self-luminous consciousness that is the source of all creation. As the Sun dispels darkness, Brahman dispels ignorance (Avidya). Praising the Sun is, in essence, praising the form of Brahman.

2. Attributes of the Sun Characteristics of Brahman:

• According to Advaita: Aditya Hridayam explains many attributes of the Sun (heat, light, life-force, lord of time, witness to everything). These attributes symbolize the characteristics of Brahman:
• Tejas (Light): Brahman is the form of Knowledge that removes ignorance.
• Shakti (Power): Brahman is the primal power behind creation, sustenance, and dissolution.
• Pranadhata (Life-giver): Brahman breathes life into all living beings.
• Lord of Time: Brahman is beyond time, yet time manifests within It.
• Sakshi (The Witness): Just as the Sun is the witness to all worldly actions, Brahman is the unattached witness to all of creation.
• The Supreme Meaning: By understanding these attributes, we indirectly learn the nature of Brahman. Recognizing these qualities in the Sun helps us identify their source, which is Brahman.

3. From the Divine to the 'Self':

• According to Advaita: Aditya Hridayam begins with the worship of the Sun visible outside. But gradually, it is understood that this Sun (Ishwara) is not different from the Atman (Self) within us.
• The Supreme Meaning: You (the individual soul), the Sun (the Lord), and Brahman (the Ultimate Truth) are different visible forms of the same single Consciousness. Through this worship, the seeker removes internal ignorance and experiences: "The brilliance in the Sun is the same as the Self within me" and "I am Brahman" (Aham Brahmasmi).

4. The Path to Victory Destruction of Ignorance:

• According to Advaita: Aditya Hridayam speaks about victory over enemies. These enemies are not just external; they are internal enemies like ignorance, desire, attachment, hatred, and fear.
• The Supreme Meaning: The internal strength gained through the praise of the Sun destroys ignorance and the resulting evils. This leads to Self-realization. When ignorance is destroyed, the soul recognizes its true nature, becomes free from all bonds, and attains Moksha. That is the true victory.

Conclusion:

Aditya Hridayam is not merely a hymn for Sun worship. It integrates devotion with the path of knowledge, teaching the unity and omnipresence of Parabrahma. Even if the Sun is viewed as an external deity, it eventually leads to the realization that it is the very Atman the unbroken form of consciousness within us and that Atman is Brahman. It is a divine path to experience that Advaitic truth.
